What is the FL-700?
FL-700 is California's joint divorce petition. Officially, it is the Joint Petition for Dissolution or Legal Separation . Both spouses or partners sign and file it together as Petitioner 1 and Petitioner 2, so nobody has to be served with papers.
Filing it together counts as service and as both of you appearing in the case, so there is no summons to serve and no response to file. Either person can be Petitioner 1 or Petitioner 2, and the choice carries no legal advantage.
